Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that appreciation is the fundamental beginning of spiritual realization. In the material world, our power of appreciation is severely limited by the material senses and the covering of the three modes of nature. People generally appreciate things based on their utility for sense gratification, such as material beauty, wealth, or youth. However, transcendental realities—such as the nature of the atomic soul or the pastimes of the Supreme Lord—cannot be appreciated by those who are blinded by pride or lust. True appreciation begins with the purification of the senses through devotional service, specifically starting with the tongue by chanting the holy name and honoring prasadam. As a devotee advances, their appreciation shifts from mundane objects to the sublime qualities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His devotees. This spiritual appreciation is not stagnant; it increases in volume and bliss, eventually leading to the realization that everything in existence is spiritual in nature. Ultimately, to appreciate the Absolute Truth, one must transcend material designations and develop the same spontaneous love exhibited by the residents of Vṛndāvana.

  • The Limit of Material Senses: Material instruments and senses are incapable of measuring or appreciating the spirit soul and the transcendental form of the Lord.
  • Purification and Progress: Real appreciation of spiritual sweetness only begins when a person is cured of the diseased state of material desire through the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
  • The Vision of a Devotee: A Kṛṣṇa conscious person appreciates the service of others and sees the spiritual nature of everything, even recognizing the heroic prowess of an enemy.
  • The Role of the Guru: A bona fide spiritual master is appreciated and worshiped worldwide because he possesses the qualities of a gosvāmī and teaches the science of God.
  • Spiritual vs. Material Pleasure: While materialists appreciate sex life and temporary name and fame, transcendentalists appreciate the eternal, increasing bliss of loving exchanges with Kṛṣṇa.
