Theme Analysis

The principle of association is one of the most powerful forces in human life. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently warns that association is contagious (saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ): if one mixes with drunkards, thieves, and materialistic people, one will inevitably adopt their degraded habits and tighten the bondage of material existence. Conversely, the only way to loosen this bondage and open the door to liberation is by actively associating with sādhus. A sādhu is defined strictly as a pure devotee who has unflinching faith in Kṛṣṇa and is fully engaged in His service. By the grace of such saintly persons, one's unwanted bad habits (anarthas) are naturally eradicated.

Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the scientific progression of spiritual life as outlined by Rūpa Gosvāmī: ādau śraddhā tataḥ sādhu-saṅgo. Spiritual life begins with a little faith (śraddhā), but to develop that faith into actual devotional practice (bhajana-kriyā), one must seek out sādhu-saṅga. When one approaches a genuine sādhu, one should not expect instructions on how to improve material comforts or bodily happiness. A sādhu's only duty is to deliver transcendental knowledge and cut the illusory knots of material affection to pieces. Recognizing that it is extremely difficult for ordinary people to find genuine saintly association in the modern age, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the very purpose of establishing the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement—including the acquisition of large plots of land for temples and communities—was to create a worldwide association of sādhus where anyone can take shelter and perfect their lives.

  • The Contagion of Association: Human character is molded by the company it keeps. Associating with materialistic people leads to degradation, while associating with sādhus leads to liberation.
  • The Sequence of Advancement: Following initial faith (śraddhā), the mandatory next step in spiritual life is sādhu-saṅga, which then naturally leads to regulated devotional service (bhajana-kriyā).
  • The Duty of a Sādhu: A true sādhu does not give advice on material improvement; his sole business is to speak about Kṛṣṇa and cut the conditioned soul's attachment to the material world.
  • Creating a Spiritual Oasis: The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement was deliberately established to provide the incredibly rare and essential association of sādhus to the general public.
