Theme Analysis

Atheistic men are characterized by their refusal to acknowledge the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that such persons believe the cosmic manifestation arises by chance or lust, without any higher control. Despite their scientific advancement and ambitious attempts to build "big residences, roads, cities and factories," their plans are ultimately frustrated by time and death. The quotes reveal that atheistic men are often envious of devotees, as seen in the life of Prahlāda Mahārāja, and they cannot understand how God works through material nature. Interestingly, the Lord sometimes appears, as in the case of Lord Buddha, to bewilderingly "cheat" such atheists into religious principles by denying the Vedas but establishing non-violence.

  • The Vision of Chance: Atheistic men deny a creator, believing everything is a result of physical combinations or chance. They cannot see Nārāyaṇa as the background of material activities.
  • Material Engagement: They are intensely attached to material enjoyment and the construction of temporary civilizations, not realizing that death will strip them of everything.
  • Enmity towards Devotees: Atheistic men often view devotees as enemies or criticize them for being dependent on God. A prime example is Hiraṇyakaśipu, who challenged his own son Prahlāda.
  • The Lowest of Mankind: Citing the Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīla Prabhupāda classifies them as nārādhama (lowest of mankind) and māyayāpahṛta-jñānā (those whose knowledge is stolen by illusion), regardless of their academic qualifications.
