Theme Analysis

Attachment to the body keeps the soul anxious because the body is temporary, painful, and destined to perish. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the living being becomes bound by false identification with the body and its by-products, such as family, possessions, comfort, and social position. Only devotional service and attachment to Kṛṣṇa can free the soul from bodily illusion and repeated birth and death.

  • Temporary Shelter: The body cannot stay, yet the conditioned soul clings to it as if it were permanent. This attachment is called asad-graha, grasping what will not endure.
  • Source of Anxiety: Bodily attachment produces fear, envy, and constant concern for comfort and survival. Because the body must deteriorate, attachment to it necessarily creates anxiety.
  • False Relationships: Husband, wife, children, and possessions appear absolute only because of bodily identification. When the self is understood as spiritual, these relationships can be seen properly and connected to Kṛṣṇa.
  • Transfer of Attachment: The perfection of yoga is to give up attachment to the body and transfer attachment to Kṛṣṇa. Devotional service does not neglect the body, but uses it as an instrument for spiritual life.
