Theme Analysis

The search for peace is a universal endeavor, yet modern society consistently fails to achieve it. Śrīla Prabhupāda observes that whether it is famous musicians like John Lennon, powerful politicians, or the United Nations, everyone is anxious for global harmony. However, because society operates on the platform of false ego and bodily identification—claiming ownership over land, family, and resources—true tranquility remains entirely out of reach. Materialistic people behave like cats and dogs fighting over scraps, proving that lasting peace can never be attained without God consciousness.

To solve this crisis, Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly points to the ultimate peace formula provided by Lord Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-gītā (5.29). To achieve actual peace, an individual (or a society) must understand three fundamental truths: first, that the Supreme Lord is the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities; second, that He is the supreme proprietor of all planets and universes; and third, that He is the supreme benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities. When one accepts Kṛṣṇa in this way, the feverish anxiety to lord over material nature immediately dissipates.

Attaining peace requires a practical shift in behavior. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that one must move from fruitive action (acting for one's own sense gratification) to devotional service (acting for the pleasure of the Lord). By renouncing the fruits of labor, subduing the senses, and continually chanting the holy names, the mind is cooled and purified of the lower modes of passion and ignorance. Even if a person has committed abominable acts in the past, Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that if they surrender utterly to Kṛṣṇa and engage steadfastly in devotional service, they will quickly become righteous and attain supreme, unadulterated peace.

  • The Failure of Materialism: Despite scientific and educational advancements, society remains disturbed because people ignore self-realization and falsely claim proprietorship over God's property.
  • The Peace Formula: Real peace is instantly available to anyone who recognizes the Supreme Lord as the ultimate enjoyer, the supreme proprietor, and the greatest friend.
  • Renunciation and Devotion: Peace of mind is achieved not through forced meditation, but by completely giving up the desire for sense gratification and offering the results of all activities to Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Ultimate Destination: A person who successfully controls their mind through Kṛṣṇa consciousness transcends all material miseries and ultimately reaches the supreme, eternal abode of the Lord.
