Theme Analysis

The human form of life is a specific laboratory for self-realization, designed to prepare the living entity for the next life. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the soul is currently entrapped in two layers of material covering—the gross and the subtle. The goal of existence is not to act within these coverings but to dismantle them and attain a spiritual body (siddha-deha). This spiritual body is eternal, full of knowledge and bliss, and is the only vehicle suitable for entering the spiritual planets.

  • The Uncomfortable Situation: The spirit soul is naturally uncomfortable in the material world because the material body is subject to birth, death, old age, and disease. The urge to attain a spiritual body is the soul's natural drive to return to its constitutional position.
  • The Process: Attaining a spiritual body is not automatic; it requires preparation. While chanting omkara leads to the impersonal brahma-jyoti, chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra leads to a personal spiritual body. Continuous service and attachment to Kṛṣṇa transform the consciousness, ensuring that at the time of death, the devotee does not take another material birth.
  • Varieties of Spiritual Forms: The spiritual body is not generic. It is tailored to the devotee's specific relationship (rasa) with the Lord. One may attain a four-handed form like Nārāyaṇa or a two-handed form like a gopī or cowherd boy in Goloka Vṛndāvana, depending on their devotional mood.
  • Final Liberation: True liberation is defined as giving up the gross and subtle bodies and attaining a body just like Kṛṣṇa's. In this state, there is no difference between the soul and the body; everything is spirit.
