Category:Attention on God

Theme Analysis

In the material world, the living entity's attention is constantly diverted by temporary, illusory engagements such as cinema attractions, mundane music, and political squabbles. The Vedic literatures prescribe that spiritual success can only be achieved when one deliberately turns their attention away from matter and focuses it fully on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The true definition of the yoga system is to concentrate one's attention on the Supersoul, Lord Viṣṇu, situated within the heart. However, in the current age, this mechanical meditation is exceedingly difficult.

Therefore, the most recommended and practical method for fixing one's attention on God is through the processes of bhakti-yoga, specifically attentive hearing (śravaṇaṁ) and chanting (kīrtanaṁ). By hearing the transcendental pastimes of Kṛṣṇa from authorized sources, a person's mind naturally becomes absorbed in the supreme whole. This one-pointed attention must also be applied practically through Deity worship. Worshiping the installed Deity with great care, preparing offerings with attention, and decorating the temple are powerful ways to spiritualize the atmosphere of one's home, making it a replica of the spiritual world and saving the mind from hellish distractions.

Furthermore, fixing one's attention on God acts as the ultimate shelter during moments of crisis. When pure devotees like Prahlāda Mahārāja or Vasudeva faced immense difficulties or astonishing situations, they immediately concentrated their sight and mind on the Lord in complete trance. Similarly, when a devotee is put into distress, it serves as an opportunity to recollect the Lord with rapt attention. As demonstrated by Arjuna on the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra, simply turning one's attention to the instructions of the Bhagavad-gītā dispels all material contamination and reveals one's eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa.

  • The True Meaning of Yoga: Genuine yoga is not merely physical exercise, but the process of focusing all attention on the Supersoul within the heart.
  • The Power of Hearing: Attentively hearing the Lord's transcendental pastimes from pure devotees is the easiest and most direct path to unalloyed devotional service.
  • Practical Engagement: Meticulous Deity worship, temple decoration, and the preparation of offerings naturally absorb the senses and protect the mind from mundane attractions.
  • Shelter in Difficulty: For a pure devotee, material distress is simply an opportunity to remember the Supreme Lord with rapt attention and complete dependence.
