Theme Analysis

The fundamental problem of conditioned life is that the living entity's attention is diverted away from the Supreme Lord and scattered among temporary material objects. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is specifically designed to correct this by teaching the art of focusing one's attention entirely on Śrī Kṛṣṇa. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, this is the actual purpose of all mystic yoga systems. An ideal yogī does not meditate on a void; rather, they concentrate their attention on the beautiful form of Śyāmasundara, who is effulgent like the sun and decorated with flower garlands.

Diverting even a fraction of one's attention toward Kṛṣṇa yields immense spiritual benefit, immediately enabling a person to begin achieving the highest perfection of life. The Vedic literatures, particularly the Upaniṣads, indirectly draw our attention to Kṛṣṇa, whereas the Bhagavad-gītā points to Him directly. By turning our attention to His service and pastimes, we force ourselves to give up all anarthas (unwanted things) and material entanglements. Even if this attention is drawn to Kṛṣṇa out of lust, fear, or enmity—as seen in the histories of various demons—the purificatory result is still immense. However, the ultimate perfection is one-pointed, steady attention driven by unalloyed love, the standard set by the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas who refuse to flicker their attention toward demigod worship.

The highest standard of this rapt attention is exhibited by the residents of Vṛndāvana. When Kṛṣṇa plays His flute, not only the gopīs but also the birds, cranes, swans, and even great demigods like Lord Śiva and Lord Brahmā are captivated, listening with completely undivided attention. The members of the Yadu dynasty demonstrated how to apply this practically in daily life; they performed their bodily and royal duties mechanically, while their actual attention remained permanently fixed on Kṛṣṇa. Whether as an exalted queen in Dvārakā personally serving the Lord, or a great warrior like Bhīṣmadeva fixing his eyes on Kṛṣṇa at the moment of death, the perfection of existence is to completely absorb one's attention in the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

  • The True Purpose of Yoga: Mystic yoga is not meant for physical health or void meditation, but for concentrating the mind fully on the beautiful form of Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Cure for Material Entanglement: Simply turning one's attention back to Kṛṣṇa and His transcendental pastimes purifies the heart and frees the soul from māyā.
  • The Standard of Pure Devotion: Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas maintain steady, unflinching attention on Kṛṣṇa, rejecting the flickering practice of worshiping various demigods.
  • The Supreme Example: The residents of Vṛndāvana and Dvārakā perfectly demonstrate how to keep one's attention entirely fixed on the Lord, whether in ecstatic trance or amidst daily duties.
