Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that aural reception, or hearing (śruti), is the most important and perfect method for receiving transcendental knowledge. Unlike experimental or ascending processes, the Vedic way of receiving knowledge is through submissive aural reception from a bona fide spiritual master to the student. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the ear is the only sense that does not sleep, making it the primary gateway for spiritual messages to reach the heart. Through this process, the spiritual master kindles the fire of realization within the "woodlike" living entity. The entire Vedic system, known as śruti, is built on this foundation, allowing even those who are illiterate to understand the highest truths simply by hearing. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that hearing about Kṛṣṇa is equivalent to touching Him, and by sincerely drinking the nectar of kṛṣṇa-kathā, one is cleansed of material attachments and envy. Ultimately, this submissive hearing allows a devotee to conquer the otherwise unconquerable Supreme Lord. Whether through the thundering vibration of Kṛṣṇa's flute or the descriptions of His pastimes in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, aural reception is the beginning of devotional training and the easiest path to self-realization and liberation.

  • The Perfect Method of Knowledge: Sabda-pramana, or receiving sound vibration from authorities by aural reception, is considered the perfect way of acquiring knowledge.
  • Ears as the Gateway: The favor of the spiritual master is received through the holes of the ears (karna-randhraih), as the ear remains active even when other senses sleep.
  • Cleansing the Heart: Simply by submissive aural reception of the transcendental message, one's heart is cleansed of all dirty things and material attachments.
  • Conquering the Unconquerable: If one lends their aural reception to hearing about God from a self-realized person, they can eventually conquer the Supreme Lord.
  • The Beginning of Service: The beginning of devotional training and service is to engage the hearing organs and receive the message of Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
