Theme Analysis

The concept of aversion (repugnance or strong dislike) operates on two distinct levels within Vedic philosophy: the diseased aversion of the conditioned soul toward God, and the healthy aversion of the liberated soul toward material illusion. Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies the conditioned soul's aversion to serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the original cause of their falldown into the material world. By misusing their minute independence, the marginal living entity rebels against their natural subordinate position, preferring the illusion of being the supreme enjoyer. This fundamental aversion to Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the "real disease" of human society, leading to a host of other negative traits, such as an aversion to receiving Vedic knowledge and a reluctance to associate with saintly persons (sādhus). Because of this rebellious attitude, Yamarāja (the lord of death) specifically targets those who are averse to the "honey" of devotional service for severe punishment.

Conversely, spiritual advancement requires neutralizing material attachments and cultivating a healthy, transcendental aversion to sense gratification. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the mechanism of rāga-dveṣa (attachment and aversion), noting that the mind is constantly swinging between loving what brings it sensual pleasure and hating what brings it pain. A true transcendentalist, particularly a pure devotee or a qualified brāhmaṇa, must rise above these dualities. A devotee does not artificially hate the material world, nor do they desire to exploit it; rather, they achieve perfect equanimity by dovetailing everything in the service of the Lord.

As a practitioner advances in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, their internal desires naturally shift. The illusory attachment to family, wealth, and bodily comforts slackens, replaced by a genuine aversion to material entanglement and faultfinding. Ultimately, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that even the most intellectually qualified brāhmaṇa or mystic sage is completely rejected and condemned to material existence if they remain averse to the loving service of the Lord's lotus feet.

  • The Original Disease: The root cause of material suffering is the living entity's misuse of independence and subsequent aversion to serving the Supreme Father.
  • The Duality of the Mind: Material life is characterized by the constant fluctuation between attachment (for things that give pleasure) and aversion (for things that cause pain), both of which are stumbling blocks to self-realization.
  • The Qualification of a Brāhmaṇa: True brāhmaṇas and pure devotees are naturally averse to sense gratification and faultfinding, focusing their energy entirely on spiritual advancement.
  • The Ultimate Condemnation: Regardless of one's material qualifications, intelligence, or mystic power, maintaining an aversion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead guarantees continued existence in the cycle of birth and death.
