Category:Avoidance of a Devotee of God

Theme Analysis

The behavior of a pure devotee of God is defined not only by what they enthusiastically accept, but also by what they consciously and strictly avoid. According to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the foremost characteristic of a Vaiṣṇava is the strict avoidance of asat-saṅga, which means completely rejecting the intimate association of materialistic persons who are devoid of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. An advanced devotee carefully avoids unnecessary conversations with those who are solely engaged in the animalistic propensities of eating, sleeping, mating, and defending. By maintaining this boundary, a devotee protects their spiritual life from the heavy contamination of the material energy.

Furthermore, a devotee actively avoids any actions tainted by material attachment. This includes strictly avoiding unoffered food, rejecting the tendency to become puffed up with false prestige, and avoiding the company of even a so-called Vaiṣṇava if their character is deeply flawed. The path of devotional service requires immense purity, and avoiding these subtle traps ensures steady and undisturbed advancement toward the supreme goal.

However, avoidance in spiritual life does not mean avoiding one's prescribed duties. As demonstrated by Arjuna on the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra, a devotee might initially try to skillfully avoid a difficult duty, such as fighting, under the pretext of moral principles or nonviolence. Yet, the Supreme Lord teaches that a devotee cannot avoid their responsibilities. Instead, they must execute their duty purely for the satisfaction of the Lord. When a devotee faithfully avoids sinful acts and spiritual hindrances—such as Bali Mahārāja rejecting the bad advice of his materialistic guru—the Lord reciprocates by offering absolute shelter. By the causeless mercy of Kṛṣṇa, even the karmically scheduled death of a pure devotee can be completely avoided.

  • Rejecting Bad Association: The defining behavioral trait of a Vaiṣṇava is the strict avoidance of asat-saṅga—people engaged entirely in materialistic pursuits.
  • Guarding Personal Habits: Devotees must diligently avoid material attachments, including eating unoffered food and harboring false pride.
  • Never Avoiding Duty: Using spiritual philosophy as an excuse to avoid one's prescribed occupational duty is a symptom of illusion, not devotion.
  • Divine Protection: By successfully avoiding spiritual hindrances, a pure devotee invokes the supreme protection of Kṛṣṇa, who can even help them avoid the stringent laws of karma and death.
