Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda draws a clear theological line between the living entity (jīva) and the Supreme Lord based on who becomes affected by the material nature. The analysis reveals that the conditioned soul is vulnerable to the influence of the three modes of nature, bad association, and sinful reactions. In contrast, Kṛṣṇa, being the master of māyā, remains eternally unaffected, even when He descends into this world. The perfection of life lies in shifting one's susceptibility: instead of being affected by material contamination, one must become "affected" by the ecstasy of devotional service.

  • The Vulnerability of the Soul: Unlike the Lord, the minute living entity is prone to contamination; even mere mental contemplation of sinful acts or association with atheists can affect the consciousness.
  • The Unaffected Lord: A key distinction in Vedic philosophy is that Kṛṣṇa is never affected by the material qualities (nirguṇa); He remains transcendental even while managing the creation.
  • Immunity through Karma-yoga: The quotes explain that one who works for Kṛṣṇa and understands the law of karma does not become affected by the results of their activities, thus escaping the cycle of reaction.
  • Spiritual "Infection": There is a positive side to becoming affected; advanced devotees become so affected by Kṛṣṇa's pastimes that they manifest physical symptoms of ecstasy, such as trembling and crying.
