Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies the desire to Become God as the ultimate illusion, or the "last snare of māyā." After being frustrated in the attempt to be a material enjoyer (a rich man, a politician, etc.), the conditioned soul often falls into the trap of thinking, "I am the Supreme." The analysis of these quotes presents a devastating logical refutation of this idea: If the living entity is God, how have they fallen under the control of illusion? If God can be covered by māyā, then māyā would be greater than God. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while the soul can become "godly" (possessing divine qualities in minute quantity), it can never become God (the infinite Supreme Controller). True self-realization lies not in an artificial claim of supremacy, but in realizing one's eternal position as the servant of God.

  • The Logical Flaw: God is the Supreme Controller. If one is controlled by material nature (suffering birth and death), one cannot be God.
  • God is Eternally God: God does not need to meditate or undergo penance to become God. Kṛṣṇa was God even as a baby on the lap of Mother Yaśodā.
  • The Last Snare: Thinking "I am God" is the final trick of the illusory energy to keep the soul bound. It is described as "transcendental insanity."
  • Godly vs. God: We can attain the quality of God (spirit), but never the quantity (infinite power). We can be godly, but never God.
