Theme Analysis

Perfection is defined as the restoration of the soul's relationship with Kṛṣṇa, the Perfect Person. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although the living entity is currently imperfect and conditioned by material nature, one can become perfect by following the perfect instructions of the Supreme Lord and His representative, the spiritual master. The "Secret of Success" lies in the disciple's submission and their willingness to make the order of the guru their life and soul. Whether through chanting the holy name for fifty years, hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam for seven days like Mahārāja Parīkṣit, or simply dovetailing one’s professional work for Kṛṣṇa, the opportunity to become perfect is open to every human being.

  • The Guru's Order: The most direct path to becoming perfect is to strictly follow the instructions of a bona fide spiritual master. A disciple should not think they have already become perfect; rather, the act of remaining ready for chastisement and following the guru’s order is itself the state of perfection.
  • Chanting and Hearing: Chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra and hearing from authoritative sources (śravaṇa) are the primary methods for this age. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that even if one is unfortunate or feels they cannot complete their rounds, the process of trying sincerely will eventually lead to cent percent perfection.
  • Dovetailing Activities: Perfection is not limited to reclusive meditators. An administrator like Arjuna, a householder, or an artist can become perfect by performing their occupational duties (sva-dharma) under the direction of the spiritual master for Kṛṣṇa's satisfaction.
