Theme Analysis

This analysis addresses the root cause of the soul's entanglement in the material world: the desire to imitate the Supreme Lord by becoming an enjoyer. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the living entity is constitutionally prakṛti (energy), meant to be enjoyed by the Puruṣa (the Energetic, Kṛṣṇa). However, conditioned souls rebel against this subordinate position and attempt to assume the role of the male, or the enjoyer. This "puruṣa-abhimāna" (conception of being the enjoyer) drives the cycle of birth and death. The analysis also highlights the futility of this attempt, describing it as a "pendulum" swinging between false enjoyment and false renunciation. True liberation is found only when one abandons the spirit of being an owner and accepts the position of being enjoyed by Kṛṣṇa.

  • The Origin of False Ego: The material world was created specifically for those who wanted to give up service and become the supreme enjoyer themselves.
  • The Puruṣa Syndrome: In the material world, everyone (regardless of gender) tries to be the puruṣa (the master/enjoyer), which is a delusion.
  • The Pendulum: Life swings between trying to enjoy (bhoga) and trying to renounce (tyāga). Both are based on the false premise of being the proprietor.
  • The Cure: The shift from "I am the enjoyer" to "I am to be enjoyed." This is the mood of the gopīs and the essence of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
