Theme Analysis

Blaspheming Kṛṣṇa is a suicidal act for the soul, comparable to embracing a venomous snake. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although the Supreme Lord is self-satisfied and unaffected by either praise or insults, His devotees cannot remain passive when their Lord is criticized. The examples of Bhīma and Sahadeva show that a devotee must exhibit anger—trembling and ready to strike—when Kṛṣṇa is blasphemed. While the Lord is so merciful that He sometimes liberates even those who hate Him (like Śiśupāla and Dantavakra), Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that this is not a path to be imitated. For the general conditioned soul, blasphemy leads to hellish planets and birth in demoniac families. The Lord's punishment of such persons is actually an act of mercy to stop their sinful habit and ultimately purify them.

  • The Devotee's Intolerance: While a devotee tolerates personal insults, they become like fire when Kṛṣṇa is blasphemed. Bhīma lamented his inability to kill Śiśupāla immediately, and Sahadeva trembled with rage.
  • The Example of Śiśupāla: Śiśupāla blasphemed Kṛṣṇa from childhood. Although he attained liberation (merging into the effulgence) due to constant absorption in Kṛṣṇa, this is not the goal of a devotee.
  • Punishment as Mercy: When Kṛṣṇa punishes a blasphemer, it is to cut off their sinful propensity. This rectification eventually allows the soul to return home, back to Godhead.
  • A Dangerous Path: One should not think that because Kṛṣṇa is unaffected, one can blaspheme Him. Such offenses generally lead to deep degradation and forgetting the service of the Lord.
