Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda defines "bodily designation" (upādhi) as the false identification of the self with the material body and its relations. In the material world, people constantly label themselves and others based on nationality, religion, race, and gender—"I am American," "I am Hindu," "I am white," "I am a man." Śrīla Prabhupāda argues that these are artificial, temporary impositions on the pure spirit soul. Just as a clear crystal appears red when placed near a red flower, the pure soul appears to have various material qualities due to contact with the body. These designations are the root of sectarianism and conflict. The goal of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is to cleanse the mirror of the heart (ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam) and become free from all such designations (sarvopādhi-vinirmuktam), thereby establishing universal unity on the spiritual platform where everyone is a part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa.

  • The List of Labels: Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently lists "American, Indian, Hindu, Muslim, Christian" to illustrate that both national and religious identities are often just skin-deep designations.
  • The Cause of Disunity: Because people focus on the outer covering, they create divisions (e.g., "European quarter," "Indian quarter"). This bodily concept is compared to the ignorance of animals.
  • Spiritual Equality: On the spiritual platform, there is no distinction between male and female, or high and low birth. A devotee is carefree because he knows he is not the body.
  • The Cure: Removing these deep-rooted labels is difficult but possible through the process of hearing kṛṣṇa-kathā (topics of Kṛṣṇa), which purifies the consciousness.
