Theme Analysis

True broadmindedness, according to Śrīla Prabhupāda, is synonymous with the Sanskrit term mahātmā—a "great soul." Unlike the cripple-minded (durātmā) who are limited by extended selfishness or sectarian views, a broadminded person understands that everything belongs to the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa. This category defines a broadminded individual as one who has surrendered to Vāsudeva, understanding Him to be the cause of all causes. Such a person is not restricted by national, social, or species-based designations; their compassion extends to all living entities, including animals. The verdict of Vedic literature is that real broadmindedness is achieved only when one engages constantly in the service of the Lord under the protection of the internal energy (daivī-prakṛti).

  • Mahātmā vs. Durātmā: A mahātmā is one whose mind is expanded to include Kṛṣṇa's interest, while a durātmā is "cripple-minded," focused on limited, material designations.
  • Universal Compassion: A Kṛṣṇa conscious person is truly broadminded because they love not only fellow humans but all creatures, including "poor animals," seeing the spirit soul in everyone.
  • The Foundation of Service: Mere humanitarianism is not true broadmindedness if it excludes God. Real expansion of the mind occurs when one dovetails their desires with the supreme will of the Lord.
  • Freedom from Envy: Broadminded devotees are friendly to all, free from jealousy (matsaratā), and work for the complete welfare of all subjects, making them the ideal leaders and teachers of society.
