Theme Analysis

Lord Caitanya's appearance serves multiple purposes, categorized by Śrīla Prabhupāda as external and internal. The external or secondary purpose was to inaugurate the saṅkīrtana movement and distribute the chanting of the holy name to the fallen souls of Kali-yuga. However, the internal and "real" reason, known only to confidential devotees like Svarūpa Dāmodara and Rāmānanda Rāya, was for the Lord to taste the transcendental bliss of the devotee. Beyond these primary causes, Lord Caitanya had specific educational purposes: He met with Sanātana Gosvāmī to teach the science of devotion, he rejected Junior Haridāsa to establish the strict standard of renounced life, and He exhibited "madness" to show that nothing exists but Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that we must understand these purposes through the mercy of the ācāryas and not imitate the Lord's behavior.

  • The External Mission: To broadcast the glories of the holy name and dispel the darkness of the soul. This is the religious practice for the Age of Kali.
  • The Confidential Mission: Revealed in the diary of Svarūpa Dāmodara, the Lord appeared to fulfill His own internal desires, which are incomprehensible to ordinary men.
  • Educational Purpose: To demonstrate that spiritual authority is not based on caste (brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya) but on qualification, and to teach that fools should not toy with Vedānta philosophy.
  • Divine Independence: As the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He acts according to His own will—sometimes fainting, sometimes walking swiftly—to teach specific lessons that should be followed, not imitated.
