Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that although Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and fully independent (svarāṭ), He strictly followed the etiquette of human society to set a perfect example. By asking permission from His mother, His devotees, and temple authorities, He demonstrated humility and respect for social and spiritual conventions.

  • Departure for Pilgrimage: A major portion of the quotes concerns the Lord's travels. Before leaving for South India or Vṛndāvana, He would formally request permission from the devotees, specifically Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya and Rāmānanda Rāya. He would also approach the Deity of Lord Jagannātha to receive His permission in the form of a garland.
  • Motherly Affection: The interaction with Mother Śacī is particularly poignant. Before leaving for Jagannātha Purī or Vṛndāvana, He would clasp her feet and beg for her blessings. This highlights that the Lord is controlled by the love of His devotees and does not wish to cause them distress, even though He must leave to fulfill His mission.
  • Temple Etiquette: Lord Caitanya also respected institutional authority. When He wanted to wash the Guṇḍicā temple, He did not simply barge in; He requested permission from the temple superintendent and Kāśī Miśra, saying, "Whatever You desire is our duty to perform."
  • Impediments of Love: Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that devotees often hesitated to give permission because they were afraid of separation. However, once the Lord obtained their blessings, He would depart, showing that while He respects their love, He also adheres to His duty.
