Theme Analysis
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the various names of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are not arbitrary but are deeply significant, revealing different aspects of His divine personality and mission. From His birth name Viśvambhara to His sannyāsa name Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, each title tells a story of His mercy and munificence.
- Viśvambhara - The Maintainer: Before His sannyāsa, the Lord was known as Viśvambhara. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this name means "one who maintains the entire universe." In His early pastimes, He flooded the world with the nectar of devotion, thus spiritually maintaining all living entities.
- Nimāi and the Scholar: In His youth, He was known as Nimāi Paṇḍita, a teacher of grammar. However, He admitted that He could not impress His students with mere grammar because His teachings were always infused with Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
- Gaurasundara - The Golden One: A prominent set of names relates to His golden complexion: Gaurasundara, Gaurāṅga, Gaurahari, and Gaurapuruṣa. These names indicate His identity as Kṛṣṇa appearing in the complexion of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.
- The Most Magnanimous: Theologically, He is known as mahā-vadānyāvatāra (the most magnanimous incarnation) and patita-pāvana (the deliverer of the fallen). Unlike other incarnations who might kill demons, Lord Caitanya delivers them through mercy and the holy name.
