Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu appeared in the role of a devotee, His identity as Lord Nārāyaṇa (the Supreme Personality of Godhead) was recognized by great scholars, astrologers, and even common people. A significant portion of these quotes focuses on the Lord's interaction with the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs of Vārāṇasī. Unlike these sannyāsīs who artificially addressed each other as "Nārāyaṇa," Lord Caitanya displayed the actual bodily symptoms, effulgence, and scriptural knowledge of the Supreme Lord, eventually forcing them to surrender to His lotus feet.

  • The Verdict of the Sannyāsīs: Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī and his disciples, who were staunch impersonalists, initially criticized the Lord. However, after seeing His effulgence and hearing His explanation of the Vedānta-sūtra, they admitted that He was directly Nārāyaṇa Himself, not a "farcical" or "moving" Nārāyaṇa like themselves.
  • Bodily Symptoms: From His infancy, learned astrologers observed the marks of Nārāyaṇa (such as the flag and thunderbolt) on His palms and soles. His extraordinary beauty and bodily luster were also cited as evidence of His divinity.
  • Parental Affection: Interestingly, while the world recognized Him as the Almighty, His father Jagannātha Miśra maintained the mood of a superior. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Jagannātha Miśra felt that even if his son were Nārāyaṇa, it was still his duty as a father to instruct Him.
  • Refuting False Incarnations: The quotes distinguish Lord Caitanya from the daridra-nārāyaṇas (poor Nārāyaṇas) or false incarnations. He is the Supreme Lord who delivers the three worlds, not a beggar claiming to be God.
