The Jagannātha temple in Purī was the central locus of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's ecstatic pastimes during the later years of His life. For the Lord, the Deity of Jagannātha was not a wooden form but the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa Himself. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Caitanya approached the temple in the mood of the gopīs meeting Kṛṣṇa at Kurukṣetra.
