Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda describes Vārāṇasī (also known as Benares or Kāśī) as a stronghold of Māyāvādī philosophers during the time of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. The Lord visited this city twice: once briefly on His way to Vṛndāvana, and again on His return, where He stayed for two months. This second visit is historically significant for two major reasons: the detailed instruction of Sanātana Gosvāmī in the science of devotional service (sambandha-jñāna) and the mass conversion of the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs led by Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī.

  • Instruction of Sanātana Gosvāmī: For two months, the Lord stayed at the house of Candraśekhara and accepted prasādam at the home of Tapana Miśra. During this time, He taught Sanātana Gosvāmī the intricacies of Vaiṣṇava philosophy, empowering him to write books and establish the doctrine of devotion.
  • Defeating the Māyāvādīs: Initially, the local sannyāsīs criticized Lord Caitanya for chanting and dancing instead of studying Vedānta. However, at a meeting arranged by a Mahārāṣṭrian brāhmaṇa, the Lord explained the Vedānta-sūtra through the lens of bhakti, converting Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī and his 60,000 disciples.
  • Turning Vārāṇasī into Navadvīpa: Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the transformation of the city was miraculous. A place previously filled with dry philosophical arguments became flooded with the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, practically turning Vārāṇasī into another Navadvīpa.
  • Humility and Etiquette: Despite being the Supreme Lord, Caitanya Mahāprabhu exhibited great humility. He lived with Candraśekhara (a śūdra by social custom) and avoided luxurious interactions, setting an example for all sannyāsīs.
