Theme Analysis

The category Cannot Control reveals the spiritual truth that the conditioned living being is not the independent controller. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that materialistic persons cannot control the senses, the mind, lust, the tongue, sex desire, society, or māyā by their own strength. When the senses are uncontrolled, they drag the living being into darker material existence, repeated birth and death, and a life spoiled by the mind's dictation. Human civilization is meant for tapasya and self-control, but in Kali-yuga ordinary methods are very difficult because people are trained for sense gratification from the beginning of life. The practical solution is Kṛṣṇa consciousness: one cannot control māyā, but by serving Kṛṣṇa, engaging the mind at His lotus feet, chanting, honoring prasādam, and accepting devotional service, the senses become controlled by higher spiritual engagement.

  • The Living Being Is Controlled: No conditioned soul is the absolute controller; even those who appear to control others are themselves controlled. If one does not become servant of Kṛṣṇa, one must become servant of māyā.
  • Uncontrolled Senses Lead to Darkness: Materialistic persons who cannot control their senses are carried toward the darkest regions of material existence. Sense control especially begins with the tongue, because uncontrolled eating and speech disturb the other senses.
  • Human Life Requires Tapasya: The distinction between animal and human life is the capacity for control. Human civilization means accepting tapasya, regulating the senses, and using the body and mind for spiritual progress.
  • Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Gives Real Control: The mind cannot be controlled by force, but when it is engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service, control becomes possible. By chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, honoring prasādam, and serving Kṛṣṇa, one rises beyond māyā's jurisdiction.
