Category:Characteristics of God
Theme Analysis
In the modern age, many foolish people blindly accept ordinary human beings or mystical charlatans as incarnations of the Supreme. Śrīla Prabhupāda strongly warns against this unscientific approach. He asserts that the characteristics of God and His various avatāras are explicitly documented in the authentic śāstras (scriptures). Great authorities like Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī have thoroughly analyzed these characteristics, providing humanity with an exact testing standard. If someone claims to be God, their attributes and activities must perfectly align with the scriptural descriptions.
A deeply profound theme in this category is the qualitative oneness between the Supreme Lord and the individual soul. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the living entities possess the exact same characteristics as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but only in a minute, fractional quantity. Because of this qualitative similarity, the process of self-realization—understanding one's own spiritual nature—is the crucial first step to understanding the characteristics of God. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out distinct differences. For example, a primary characteristic of God is that He has absolutely nothing to do; He is entirely self-sufficient, unlike important men in the material world who are burdened with endless tasks. Furthermore, the Lord's characteristics are inherently all-auspicious, and He characteristically overlooks any accidental offenses committed by His pure devotees, showering them with causeless mercy.
- The Scriptural Test: God is not accepted by whimsy or popular vote. The defining characteristics of the Absolute Truth and His incarnations are strictly verified through the śāstras.
- Qualitative Oneness: The living entity shares the characteristics of the Supreme Lord in minute quantity. Thus, self-realization forms the basis for God realization.
- The Supreme Autocrat: A unique characteristic of the Supreme Lord is that He has nothing to do. His multifarious potencies automatically manage the entire cosmic manifestation.
- Divine Forgiveness: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is characterized by His profound affection and forgiveness, never taking the accidental offenses of a pure devotee seriously.
