Theme Analysis

The concept of "cheating religion" (kaitava-dharma) is central to the pure philosophical presentation of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. True religion is not a mere sectarian label—such as Hindu, Muslim, or Christian—nor is it a manufactured system of ethical codes. Religion means the law of God, and its ultimate goal is to know and love the Supreme Lord. Therefore, any system that has no clear conception of God, imagines God to be formless, or allows followers to manufacture their own spiritual processes is a cheating religion. Furthermore, a religion is exposed as a deception when it permits unnecessary violence, such as animal slaughter, despite the clear commandments of past prophets. Even highly organized systems aimed at material elevation (dharma, artha, kāma) or impersonal liberation (mokṣa) are classified as cheating because they maintain a selfish motive rather than fostering pure dedication to the Lord. To establish the highest truth, the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam begins by completely kicking out (projjhita) all these cheating religions, leaving only pure, unmotivated devotional service (bhakti) as the first-class religion for all humanity.

  • Godless Fabrications: Any system that lacks a true understanding of God, or encourages people to invent their own spiritual paths, is merely cheating its followers.
  • Violence and Hidden Motives: Religions that ignore nonviolence (like animal killing) or that are driven by the desire for material gain and liberation are deceptive.
  • The Bhāgavatam's Rejection: The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam uncompromisingly sweeps away all forms of cheating religion to protect innocent seekers from being misled.
  • The Supreme Path: The only true, first-class religion is one that teaches the soul how to unconditionally surrender to and love the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
