Theme Analysis

The conditioned state is the existential reality of the living entity within the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes it as a "diseased condition" or a state of sleeping, caused by the soul's misuse of independence and subsequent forgetfulness of its relationship with God. In this state, the living entity identifies with the material body, thinking "I am American," "I am black," or "I am white." This false identification leads to a struggle for existence where one is forced to act by the three modes of nature, driven by contaminated intelligence and the desire to lord it over matter. The conditioned soul is limited by a "common brain" and imperfect senses, making it impossible to conceive of the Lord's inconceivable potencies. However, this state is not permanent; by transferring attachment from matter to Kṛṣṇa, the soul can regain its original, liberated consciousness.

  • Bodily Identification: The hallmark of the conditioned state is identifying the self with the body and its designations (nationality, race, species).
  • Forced Action: Unlike the liberated state where service is voluntary, the conditioned soul is forced to act by the impulses of material nature (lust, anger, hunger).
  • Limited Perception: The conditioned brain cannot understand God's simultaneous presence in the atom and the cosmos. Senses are limited and defective.
  • The Cure: The solution is to link with the Supreme through yoga. Even in the conditioned state, if one sincerely engages the senses in Kṛṣṇa's service, they are considered liberated.
