Theme Analysis

The way a person considers Lord Kṛṣṇa perfectly reveals their spiritual standing. According to the Bhagavad-gītā, when the Supreme Personality of Godhead descends in His original, human-like form (sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha), less intelligent people (mūḍhas) immediately deride Him. Because their vision is entirely conditioned by the material modes of nature, these atheists, karmīs, and Māyāvādīs foolishly consider Kṛṣṇa to be an ordinary human being, a historical personality, or a product of material creation. Māyāvādī philosophers commit the greatest offense by declaring that Kṛṣṇa's body is made of material goodness and that His pastimes are merely māyā. The Vedic scriptures strictly condemn this mundane calculation, stating that anyone who considers the Lord's body to be material should be ostracized from all spiritual rituals.

Conversely, there is another group of living entities who also consider Kṛṣṇa to be an ordinary boy: the pure devotees of Goloka Vṛndāvana. However, their vision is not clouded by mundane ignorance, but by the overwhelming brilliance of pure transcendental love (prema), orchestrated by the Lord's internal energy, yoga-māyā. Out of intense affection, Mother Yaśodā considered Kṛṣṇa her dependent child, even attempting to bind Him with ropes, completely forgetting His unlimited opulence. Similarly, the cowherd boys considered Him their equal friend, and the gopīs considered Him their beloved paramour, sometimes even chastising Him.

This intimate, human-like reciprocation is the absolute highest perfection of spiritual life. The Lord Himself declares that He becomes completely subordinate to a devotee who cherishes such pure, loving devotion, considering Him as a son, friend, or beloved rather than a distant, reverential God. While the mental speculators are bewildered by Kṛṣṇa acting as a henpecked husband to 16,108 queens, the pure devotees relish these pastimes as the supreme proof of His absolute, all-attractive nature. Therefore, the ultimate goal of human life is to stop considering Kṛṣṇa through the lens of material logic and instead enter into the science of devotional service, accepting Him as the supreme master, friend, and ultimate goal.

  • The Folly of the Mūḍhas: Less intelligent persons, conditioned by material nature, commit the grave offense of considering Kṛṣṇa an ordinary human being or historical figure.
  • The Māyāvādī Offense: It is highly offensive to consider Kṛṣṇa's transcendental body to be made of material energy (māyā); such offenders cannot understand the Absolute Truth.
  • The Ecstasy of Yoga-Māyā: In Vṛndāvana, pure devotees like Mother Yaśodā and the cowherd boys consider Kṛṣṇa an ordinary boy due to intense, unalloyed love, not ignorance.
  • The Lord's Subordination: Kṛṣṇa willingly becomes subordinate to devotees who abandon awe and veneration, preferring to be considered an equal friend, a dependent son, or a beloved paramour.
