Category:Constitutional Position Of The Living Entity

Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda defines the constitutional position of the living entity as one of eternal servitorship to the Supreme Lord. This category gathers quotes that define the soul (jīva) not as an independent controller, but as a subordinate part and parcel of God. The central teaching is that service is intrinsic to the soul; if one does not voluntarily serve Kṛṣṇa, one is forced to serve the dictates of the senses and the illusory energy (māyā).

  • Jīvera 'Svarūpa' Haya: The most cited definition is from Lord Caitanya: the living entity is eternally a servant of Kṛṣṇa. This is not a temporary role but the permanent nature of the self.
  • Subordination and Dependence: The living entity is infinitesimal, while God is infinite. Therefore, the constitutional position is to be subordinate and cooperative. Trying to imitate the Supreme Lord is the cause of material bondage.
  • Predominated Enjoyer: God is the only enjoyer (bhoktā). The living entities are meant to be enjoyed. Suffering arises when the predominated tries to become the predominator.
  • Two Types of Service: Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that service is unavoidable. One is either a servant of God (liberation) or a servant of māyā (bondage). There is no third position of absolute independence.
  • Restoration of Identity: Real liberation is defined as giving up false designations (like "I am a man," "I am rich") and being reinstated in one's original constitutional position as a servant. This brings immediate peace and bliss (brahma-bhūta).
