Theme Analysis

Contaminated consciousness is the fundamental cause of the living entity's struggle within the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that consciousness is inherently pure, but when it is covered by the modes of nature, it develops the "I am the enjoyer" mentality. This contamination is formally categorized as part of the subtle body, alongside mind, intelligence, and false ego. Under this influence, the soul perceives the world as a field for personal gratification, a state Śrīla Prabhupāda compares to a dream. In contrast, Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the awakened state where the soul recognizes Kṛṣṇa as the absolute enjoyer. The goal of the Bhagavad-gītā is to purify this consciousness, allowing the soul to transcend material designations (upādhis) and begin its real life of transcendental service.

  • The Subtle Body Configuration: Contaminated consciousness is one of the four aspects of the internal, subtle senses, distinct from the gross elements of earth, water, fire, air, and ether.
  • The Dream of Enjoyment: In a contaminated state, the "I am" becomes "I am the lord of all I survey," leading to a life of struggle and reduced spiritual power.
  • The Definition of Mukti: Liberation is defined as being situated in pure consciousness, where actions are no longer governed by personal whim but are aligned with the will of the Supreme.
  • Requirement for Transcendental Vision: To speak about or understand the transcendental world, one must first be free from materially contaminated consciousness.
