Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda illuminates the supreme paradox of spiritual life: Kṛṣṇa, who controls infinite universes, is Himself controlled by the pure love of His devotees. This category explores the nature of this control, distinguishing it from material subjugation. It reveals that while Kṛṣṇa is unconquerable by force, intellect, or mystic power, He willingly sells Himself to those who love Him without motivation.

  • The Supreme Controller (Īśvara): Śrīla Prabhupāda first establishes Kṛṣṇa's position as the ultimate authority. He is the cause of all causes and the controller of māyā. Unlike living entities who are controlled by the modes of nature, Kṛṣṇa is never under the influence of external energy.
  • Conquered by Prema (Love): The central theme is that unalloyed devotional service is so powerful that it brings the Lord under control. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Kṛṣṇa agrees to be controlled only by the "stick" of the devotee's love, just as a chaste wife controls a gentle husband.
  • The Residents of Vṛndāvana: The perfection of this control is seen in Vṛndāvana. Mother Yaśodā binds Him, the cowherd boys ride on His shoulders, and the gopīs make Him dance like a doll. This intimacy is the goal of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.
  • Māyā cannot Control Kṛṣṇa: Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies a crucial theological point: while devotees control Kṛṣṇa, the material energy (māyā) never can. Those who think Kṛṣṇa is an ordinary being forced to take birth by the laws of nature are described as fools (mūḍhas).
