Theme Analysis

In Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings, "darkness" is synonymous with ignorance (avidyā) and the material world (tamas). Just as physical darkness is simply the absence of sunlight, spiritual darkness is the absence of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The material universe is described as naturally dark, requiring the sun, moon, and fire for illumination, whereas the spiritual world is self-luminous. The conditioned soul, covered by the bodily concept of life, exists in this darkness, often unaware of the light of the soul. The Vedic injunction tamasi mā jyotir gama—"Don't remain in darkness; go to the light"—is the guiding principle for human life. This darkness is dissipated not by mental speculation but by the "sun" of Kṛṣṇa and the "torchlight" of knowledge given by the guru.

  • Nature of World: The material world is inherently dark (tamas), necessitating artificial lighting.
  • Sun Analogy: Kṛṣṇa is like the sun; māyā is like darkness. Where there is Kṛṣṇa, there is no māyā.
  • Shadow: Darkness has no separate existence; it is merely a shadow formed when one turns away from Kṛṣṇa.
  • Path to Light: The purpose of human life is to leave the darkness of sense gratification and enter the light of spiritual understanding.
  • Role of the Guru: The guru's duty is to open the disciple's eyes, saving them from the darkness of nescience.
