Theme Analysis
In Vedic epistemology, there are exactly two methods for acquiring knowledge: the ascending process and the descending process. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the ascending process, known in Sanskrit as āroha-panthā, is based on inductive logic, scientific research, and mental speculation. This is the method favored by mundane philosophers, scientists, and māyāvādī speculators who attempt to understand the Absolute Truth by exercising their own mental power. However, because the human senses are fundamentally imperfect and prone to illusion, the ascending process can never pierce through the material covering to reach the transcendental platform. Attempting to understand the infinite through finite experimental knowledge only leads to absolute confusion.
The only authorized way to learn transcendental knowledge is through the descending process, or avaroha-panthā. This process is based on deductive logic, where perfect knowledge descends from a perfect, infallible source. Instead of making a strenuous, independent effort to discover the truth, the practitioner simply accepts the established facts as they are presented in the Vedas. A true mahātmā never invents their own religious or philosophical method; they strictly accept the standard knowledge that comes down directly from the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
This transmission of descending knowledge is technically known as the paramparā system, or the disciplic succession. The supreme authority is Lord Kṛṣṇa, who originally imparted this perfect knowledge to Lord Brahmā, as confirmed in the Brahma-saṁhitā. From Brahmā, the knowledge flows down through a chain of self-realized spiritual masters. Therefore, one does not need to be a highly polished literary scholar to achieve perfection; one simply needs to be expert in submissively hearing from a bona fide spiritual master who represents this unbroken descending line.
- Two Paths of Knowledge: Vedic philosophy categorizes the pursuit of knowledge into the ascending process (inductive speculation) and the descending process (deductive authority).
- The Flaw of Speculation: The ascending process (āroha-panthā) is inherently flawed and leads to confusion because it relies on the imperfect senses and limited mental power of the conditioned soul.
- The Perfect Method: The descending process (avaroha-panthā) is the only authorized method for understanding the Absolute Truth, as it relies on receiving facts from an infallible source.
- The Paramparā System: Descending knowledge is flawlessly transmitted through the disciplic succession, originating from Kṛṣṇa and passed down through authorized spiritual masters.

- A mahatma accepts the standard, deductive, descending process - that is, the method that comes down directly from the Supreme Lord or through His bona fide representatives
- A mahatma never tries to approach Godhead by any invented method, any inductive, ascending process. Rather, he accepts the standard, deductive, descending process - that is, the method that comes down directly from the Supreme Lord
- According to Brahma-samhita there are two ways of acquiring knowledge - the ascending process and the descending process
- Ascending and descending
- Ascending process and descending process. So by ascending process, we can never come to the real knowledge. That is not possible, because our senses are imperfect
I
- It (Vedic knowledge) comes down from the Lord by disciplic succession, and this transcendental knowledge is distributed to the world by this descending process
- It is not necessary for one to be a highly polished literary man to receive knowledge; to receive perfect knowledge from a perfect person, one must be expert in hearing. This is called the descending process of deductive knowledge, or avaroha-pantha
O
- One is called ascending process, or inductive logic, and another process is descending process, or deductive logic. So ascending process is based on speculation, and descending process is based on fact
- One must follow the avaroha-pantha, the process of descending knowledge. Therefore one must accept the parampara system. And the best parampara is that which extends from Krsna
- Our process is avaroha pantha, descending process, and the Mayavadi philosopher's policy or system is ascending policy. I want to understand the Absolute Truth by exercising my mental power - that is called ascending process, or inductive process
- Our process is descending process. We are not trying to understand by the ascending process. Inductive or deductive. We accept the statements of the Vedas. Therefore we haven't got to make much effort to understand the thing
S
- Spiritual master means one who has heard correctly from his Spiritual Master. In this way, ultimately it goes to Krishna, the Supreme Spiritual Master. There is no possibility of understanding the Vedic knowledge without this descending process
- Subject which is beyond their understanding by experimental knowledge, and if they try to understand it by the same experimental knowledge, that means confusion. This has to be understood by descending process of disciplic succession
T
- That is the way of explaining the Vedic knowledge (it is disseminated by authorities like Sukadeva Gosvami), technically known as the parampara system, or descending process
- The other process is the descending process, and this is the parampara process. By this method, knowledge descends from a higher source
- The truth of these mysteries (of Krsna's uncommon acts and attributes) was revealed to Brahma by the descending process, without the help of the ascending one
- There are two kinds of processes to receive knowledge. The Vedic process says avaroha-pantha, descending process. And the material process is aroha-pantha, ascending process, research
- There are two processes of understanding the Absolute Truth. One is called ascending process, or inductive logic, and another process is descending process, or deductive logic
- This is the way of understanding. It is called descending process. And there is another process, which is called ascending process. In Sanskrit it is called aroha-pantha, avaroha-pantha
- This process - hearing from higher authorities - is called the deductive, or descending, process of knowledge. It is the only authorized way to learn transcendental knowledge. By this method alone is eternal truth transmitted
- Transcendental knowledge has to be accepted by the descending process of disciplic succession as Brahma presents the knowledge of Krsna in the Brahma-samhita
- Transcendental knowledge has to be accepted by the descending process of disciplic succession, as Brahma presents the knowledge of Krsna in the Brahma-samhita
V
- Vedic knowledge is to receive knowledge by descending process, knowledge coming from authority. That, that you will find in the Bhagavad-gita, Fourth Chapter: evam parampara praptam imam rajarsayo viduh
- Vedic process is not to acquire knowledge by ascending process, inductive process. Vedic knowledge is to receive knowledge by descending process, knowledge coming from authority
