Theme Analysis
The Vedic literatures are entirely dedicated to revealing the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa. Often, the Upaniṣads describe the Absolute Truth as nirguṇa, which less intelligent philosophers mistake to mean "formless" or "void." However, Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently clarifies that nirguṇa means Kṛṣṇa has no material qualities governed by the modes of nature. Instead, He is the reservoir of sixty-four primary transcendental qualities, ranging from His all-cognizant nature to His unmatched forgiving disposition. The authentic scriptures, such as Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and Mahābhārata, meticulously describe these supreme attributes.
Recognizing and describing these qualities is the primary occupation of the great authorities. From Vyāsadeva to Śukadeva Gosvāmī, and from Garga Muni to Uddhava, the pure devotees of the Lord find their greatest satisfaction in discussing Kṛṣṇa's magnanimous and wonderful character. Uddhava beautifully notes the Lord's supreme humility—though He is the proprietor of millions of universes, He sometimes begs a little land or consults His devotees as if He were an ordinary person.
For a practitioner of bhakti-yoga, describing Kṛṣṇa's qualities is both the means and the end of spiritual life. As a devotee reaches the advanced stage of bhāva (ecstatic love), they naturally manifest a spontaneous and intense eagerness to chant and describe the Lord's attributes. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Himself became overwhelmed with ecstasy when describing Kṛṣṇa's mellows. By following the example of Mahārāja Ambarīṣa—who perfectly engaged his mind on Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet and his words in describing His qualities—any sincere soul can attain the perfection of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
- Nirguṇa vs. Saguṇa: Kṛṣṇa is devoid of material qualities but is the supreme reservoir of sixty-four unlimited, transcendental, spiritual qualities.
- The Testimony of Sages: Great authorities like Vyāsadeva, Śukadeva Gosvāmī, and Uddhava have filled the Vedic literatures with vivid descriptions of Kṛṣṇa's divine attributes.
- The Symptom of Ecstasy: A key characteristic of a devotee on the platform of bhāva (ecstatic love) is a continuous, eager attachment to describing the Lord's qualities.
- Practical Application: Spiritual perfection is achieved by actively engaging the faculty of speech in describing the qualities, name, and fame of Kṛṣṇa, as demonstrated by King Ambarīṣa.
