Theme Analysis

Every human endeavor—whether economic, intellectual, or spiritual—is driven by the expectation of a specific fruit or "desired result" (kāma-sandohaḥ). Śrīla Prabhupāda analyzes this pursuit across different paths. For the materialist, the result is sense gratification; for the jñānī, liberation; and for the yogi, mystic power. However, the analysis reveals that without the touch of bhakti (devotional service), all these other paths are like "beating empty husks of wheat"—laborious but fruitless. The ultimate desired result of human life is neither material enjoyment nor the cessation of existence, but the awakening of dormant love for Kṛṣṇa. This perfection can be achieved through any of the nine processes of devotional service when executed under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master.

  • The Essential Ingredient: Rituals, penances, and philosophical speculation are powerless on their own. Unless mixed with devotional service, they cannot award the desired result.
  • The Nine Gates to Perfection: The path of bhakti is so versatile that one can achieve the highest perfection by adopting any one of the nine processes—hearing (Parīkṣit), chanting (Śukadeva), serving (Hanumān), or surrendering everything (Bali).
  • The Supreme Sanctioner: Ultimately, Kṛṣṇa is the master of all sacrifices. Whether one worships demigods or performs duty, the result is awarded by the Supreme Lord according to His arrangement.
  • The Real Goal: The desired result of chanting the Holy Name is not liberation from material bondage, but the development of love of God.
