Theme Analysis

In Vedic philosophy, the concept of evolution does not refer to the physical mutation of species, as proposed by Darwin, but rather to the gradual development of the soul's consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that every living entity is an eternal spirit soul, but their consciousness is covered to different degrees depending on their material body. In a stone or a tree, consciousness is deeply dormant; if you cut a tree, it cannot actively protest. In the animal kingdom, consciousness is slightly more developed, allowing for basic sensory perception and the instinctual drives of eating, sleeping, mating, and defending. However, animals do not possess the sufficiently developed consciousness required to inquire into the purpose of life or understand the Absolute Truth.

By the strict laws of material nature, the soul gradually transmigrates through 8,400,000 species until it is awarded the human form of life. The human body is a special, rare opportunity because it provides the highly developed consciousness necessary for self-realization. A sane, civilized human being must utilize this advanced intelligence to ask, "Why am I suffering?" and to search out the Supreme Lord. Unfortunately, modern materialistic society misuses this exceptional gift. Instead of pursuing spiritual emancipation, people use their developed consciousness merely to invent more sophisticated and unnatural methods of animalistic sense gratification—a philosophy known as hedonism. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that those who squander their human life in this way are no better than two-legged animals and will inevitably be forced back down into lower species.

The ultimate goal of human life is to completely develop one's dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness. This is achieved by engaging in devotional service, taking shelter of authoritative scriptures like the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and associating with pure devotees. The Vedic system of varṇāśrama-dharma is specifically designed to elevate human consciousness to godly consciousness. Regardless of one's external religious affiliation, the supreme test of a successful life is whether one has fully developed their love for God, thereby qualifying themselves to return to the spiritual sky, Vaikuṇṭhaloka.

  • The Nature of Evolution: Evolution is the gradual development of the soul's consciousness through different material bodies, not the physical mutation of matter.
  • The Human Opportunity: The human form of life provides the uniquely developed consciousness required to inquire about the Absolute Truth and achieve self-realization.
  • The Misuse of Intelligence: Modern society tragically misuses its highly developed human consciousness to pursue unnatural, sophisticated forms of animalistic sense gratification.
  • The Ultimate Goal: The perfection of human life is to fully develop one's dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness and return to the eternal spiritual world.
