Theme Analysis

The development of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the absolute and singular purpose of human existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently teaches that while the soul evolves through 8,400,000 species of life, the rare human form is specifically designed to awaken the living entity's dormant spiritual consciousness. If one merely executes their occupational or religious duties without developing Kṛṣṇa consciousness, all their labor is simply a waste of time and energy. Modern civilization is deeply flawed because it encourages the massive expansion of material industries and sense gratification, completely ignoring the soul's urgent need for self-realization. The true ideal of civilization, including the system of varṇāśrama-dharma, is to organize society so that everyone can comfortably and simply develop their Krsna consciousness.

The process of developing this consciousness is entirely natural, but it requires specific conditions to flourish. It cannot be concocted or achieved through independent speculation; it strictly requires the association of pure devotees. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness was established precisely for this purpose: to provide the association necessary to transform a neophyte's preliminary faith into mature, unalloyed devotion. Through the simple, authorized process of śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam (hearing and chanting) and by partaking of Kṛṣṇa's prasādam, the heavily conditioned soul is gradually cleansed of material contamination (anartha-nivṛtti).

As a devotee develops Kṛṣṇa consciousness, profound internal and external changes occur. The devotee naturally manifests all the good qualities of the demigods, loses all attachment to material sense gratification, and begins to see everyone equally on a spiritual platform. They no longer distinguish between men, animals, or nationalities, realizing instead that everyone is a part and parcel of the Supreme Father. Ultimately, this systematic development ensures that at the time of death, the soul does not create another material body, but is instantly transferred back home, back to Godhead, successfully solving the ultimate problem of repeated birth and death.

  • The Purpose of Human Life: The rare human form of life is meant exclusively for developing Kṛṣṇa consciousness; without it, all other activities are a waste of time.
  • The Necessity of Association: Spiritual development cannot occur in isolation or in bad company; it strictly requires the shelter and guidance of pure devotees.
  • The Cleansing Process: Through regulated hearing, chanting, and eating prasādam, the dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness is awakened naturally, cleansing the heart of material lust.
  • The Ultimate Result: A highly developed Kṛṣṇa conscious person acquires all divine qualities, views all living entities equally, and guarantees their return to the spiritual world.
