Theme Analysis

The concept of developing love of God cuts through all sectarian divisions and superficial religious designations. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently emphasizes that the ultimate test of any religious system—whether one identifies as Hindu, Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist—is simply how much the practitioner has developed unmotivated, spontaneous love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam declares this as the highest, most perfect definition of religion (sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje). If a person performs extensive rituals, follows strict morality, or achieves material elevation as a brāhmaṇa or demigod, but fails to develop this dormant love, their efforts are considered a complete waste of time. True religion is not about the formalities; it is evaluated strictly by the result (phalena paricīyate).

The process of awakening this love is scientific and gradual. It begins with preliminary faith (śraddhā) and the crucial association of pure devotees. By engaging in the process of śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte—hearing and chanting about Kṛṣṇa under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master—the heavily conditioned mind is cleansed of material rubbish. As the heart becomes purified, the devotee progresses through stages of attachment and transcendental emotion (bhāva), finally reaching the pinnacle of pure love (prema). This love manifests in various transcendental relationships, beginning with dāsya-rasa (servitude) and expanding to the highest ecstasies, which are compared to the most concentrated and powerful forms of sugar candy (mahābhāva).

When a devotee successfully develops this love, their vision and existence are radically transformed. Their eyes become anointed with the salve of devotion (premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena), allowing them to see the beautiful form of Śyāmasundara twenty-four hours a day, in every atom and at every step. At this highly elevated stage, artificial meditation becomes completely unnecessary. Furthermore, the desire for impersonal liberation (mukti) evaporates, as liberation itself stands before the pure devotee with folded hands, ready to render menial service. Ultimately, developing this supreme love solves all contending problems of material existence, allowing the living entity to return home, back to Godhead.

  • The Universal Test: The absolute criterion for evaluating any religious path is whether it successfully helps the practitioner develop pure, unmotivated love of God.
  • The Process of Awakening: Dormant love is awakened not by mundane rituals, but through the association of pure devotees and the constant hearing and chanting of the holy name.
  • The Transformation of Vision: A devotee who has developed pure love has their eyes anointed with devotion, allowing them to see God everywhere, at every single moment.
  • The Supreme Perfection: When love of God is fully developed, material desires vanish, and even liberation (mukti) becomes an insignificant maidservant to the pure devotee.
