Theme Analysis

The struggle for spiritual perfection is not a battle of suppression but one of redirection. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the living entity is an eternal part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa, and therefore the senses belong to Kṛṣṇa. In the material condition, we act as godāsa, or servants of the senses, but by practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we regain our original position as gosvāmī, the master of the senses. This analysis highlights that the tongue is the gateway to this transformation; by engaging it in chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra and tasting Kṛṣṇa-prasādam, the other senses are naturally and automatically led toward purification. From the ideal kingship of Yudhiṣṭhira to the total absorption of Ambarīṣa Mahārāja, the message is clear: when the senses are locked in the service of Hṛṣīkeśa, the material disease is cured, and the devotee transcends the platform of material nature.

  • The Definition of Perfection: Using Kṛṣṇa's own senses in His service is the perfection of life, re-establishing the soul in its original, constitutional position.
  • The Tongue as the Leader: All senses are led by the tongue; therefore, spiritual progress begins with vibrating the holy name and tasting remnants offered to the Lord.
  • Automatic Sense Control: Unlike the forced methods of artificial renunciation, a Kṛṣṇa conscious person automatically controls their senses because they have no opportunity to engage them in anything else.
  • Liberation from Material Nature: By engaging our energy, mind, and senses in Kṛṣṇa's service, we are no longer existing within the material modes but are situated on the transcendental platform.
