Theme Analysis

Fighting is generally considered an act of violence and a source of sinful reaction. However, Srila Prabhupada explains that when fighting is performed under the order of the Supreme Lord, it becomes transcendental. This is the central lesson of the Bhagavad-gita, where Krishna engages Arjuna in fighting not for personal sense gratification, but as a service to the Divine. There is a distinction between dharma-yuddha (righteous fighting) and adharma-yuddha (political or envious fighting). Furthermore, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself possesses the propensity to fight, engaging in mock battles with His friends or annihilating demons like Kamsa and Jarasandha to reduce the burden of the earth.

  • Fighting as Bhakti: Superficially, Arjuna's fighting appears violent, but because he acted under Krishna's order, he incurred no sinful reaction; rather, it was pure devotional service.
  • Righteous vs. Political War: A ksatriya is duty-bound to fight for a religious cause (dharma-yuddha), whereas modern wars are often based on political whims (adharma-yuddha) caused by a lack of God consciousness.
  • The Lord's Pastimes: God is not void of activities; He engages in wrestling and mock fighting with His cowherd friends and also fights formidable demons, proving that the fighting spirit is originally present in the Absolute Truth.
  • The Cause of Conflict: Material fighting arises from godlessness; when people lose interest in Visnu, they engage in unnecessary bombing and destruction despite having sufficient resources provided by nature.
