Theme Analysis

Engaging in sense enjoyment is the fundamental symptom of material conditioning. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the soul's original nature is to serve Kṛṣṇa, under the influence of the external potency, it seeks pleasure through the bodily limbs and senses. This pursuit is described as a form of madness that entangles the living entity in repeated birth and death. Whether one's activities are "sinful" or "virtuous," as long as the focus remains on material gratification, the door to liberation remains closed. A person dedicated to such enjoyment is called a "kṛpaṇa" (miser), because they fail to use the valuable human life for self-realization. Śrīla Prabhupāda also warns against the association of those engaged in gross sense enjoyment, as such association "opens the door to hell," and instead encourages the dovetailing of the senses in the service of the Lord.

  • The Trap of the Materialist: Materialistic persons worship various demigods simply to fulfill temporary desires for sense enjoyment, oblivious to the resulting karmic reactions.
  • Miser vs. Brāhmaṇa: The distinction between a miser and a wise man lies entirely in whether the body is used for sense enjoyment or for the service of the Supreme Lord.
  • The Danger of Association: Rendering service to or associating with a "viṣayī" (one interested only in sense gratification) has a detrimental effect on one's spiritual progress.
  • False Renunciation: Without Kṛṣṇa consciousness, any temporary detachment from sense enjoyment, such as "śmaśāna-vairāgya" (cremation ground renunciation), is quickly lost.
