Theme Analysis

The "enjoying spirit" is an intrinsic quality of the soul, derived from its source, Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because God is the supreme enjoyer (puruṣa) and we are His parts and parcels, we naturally possess a minute propensity to enjoy. However, the living entity falls into the material world when this spirit is misdirected—when one tries to imitate Kṛṣṇa and become the enjoyer rather than the enjoyed. In this conditioned state, everyone (whether in a male or female body) acts with the mentality of a puruṣa, thinking "I shall enjoy." This false enjoying spirit is the root of material bondage, driving the soul through 8,400,000 species of life. The cure is not to kill the spirit (which is impossible) but to purify it by utilizing one's senses for the satisfaction of the Supreme Enjoyer.

  • Origin in Kṛṣṇa: Our enjoying spirit exists because it exists originally in Kṛṣṇa, the reservoir of pleasure.
  • The Puruṣa Mentality: In the material world, everyone thinks they are the enjoyer (puruṣa), regardless of their gender.
  • Cause of Bondage: We are entangled because we want to enjoy without Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Danger of Association: Viewing objects or people with a spirit of enjoyment is the trap; seeing them as Kṛṣṇa's energy is the liberation.
  • False Renunciation: Frustrated materialists often try to become "one with God," which is just another form of the enjoying spirit.
