Theme Analysis

The fundamental disease of the material world is the envy of Kṛṣṇa. Srila Prabhupada explains that this envy manifests as the question, "Why should Kṛṣṇa be the enjoyer?" The conditioned soul, desiring to imitate the Supreme Lord, rejects His authority and attempts to lord it over material nature. This envious mentality acts as an impenetrable barrier to spiritual knowledge; even great scholars cannot understand the Bhagavad-gita if they are envious, their attempts being compared to bees licking a bottle of honey from the outside. Historical figures like Sisupala and Kamsa exemplify this demoniac nature, constantly thinking of Kṛṣṇa as an enemy. While the Lord casts such envious persons into hellish conditions, He imparts the most confidential knowledge to those who are anasuyave, or non-envious, like Arjuna, relieving them of all material miseries.

  • The Beginning of Material Life: The desire to be the enjoyer and the refusal to accept Kṛṣṇa's supremacy constitute the beginning of maya and material bondage.
  • The Barrier to Understanding: Envious scholars and non-devotees cannot access the true meaning of the scriptures; their commentaries are considered useless and misleading.
  • Demoniac Examples: Characters like Sisupala and Kamsa demonstrate that thinking of Kṛṣṇa enviously is not devotional service, although it may lead to a type of liberation due to constant concentration.
  • The Qualification for Knowledge: Freedom from envy is the primary qualification for receiving the confidential wisdom of the Bhagavad-gita and attaining relief from material existence.
