Theme Analysis

The ambition to become "equal to God" is identified by Śrīla Prabhupāda as the "last snare of maya" and the root cause of material bondage. While the living entity is qualitatively one with the Supreme Lord—sharing the nature of eternity, knowledge, and bliss—they are quantitatively different, just as a drop of ocean water is qualitatively equal to the vast ocean but quantitatively infinitesimal. This distinction refutes the Māyāvāda philosophy which claims the soul is identical to God. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that God (Nārāyaṇa or Kṛṣṇa) is asamordhva, meaning no one is equal to or greater than Him. This applies even to exalted demigods like Brahmā and Śiva; considering them equal to Nārāyaṇa constitutes an offense known as pāṣaṇḍī-buddhi. However, in the spiritual world, intense love can create a sense of equality (as in friendship), but the devotee always remains a servant at heart.

  • Qualitative vs. Quantitative: The soul is equal to God in quality (sac-cid-ānanda) but never in quantity or potency.
  • Asamordhva: God is the Supreme; no one, including the greatest demigods, is equal to or greater than Him.
  • The Pāṣaṇḍī Definition: One who thinks demigods like Śiva or Brahmā are equal to Viṣṇu is an atheist (pāṣaṇḍī).
  • The Ultimate Illusion: The desire to be equal to God is the cause of our fall and continued entrapment in maya.
  • Spiritual Equality: In specific rasas (like friendship) or liberations (like sārṣṭi), a devotee may possess equal opulence or treat the Lord as an equal, but this is a manifestation of love, not a loss of identity.
