Category:Eternal Duty
Theme Analysis
While the material body and its associated designations are temporary, the living entity possesses an eternal nature known as sanātana-dharma. Śrīla Prabhupāda defines this eternal occupational duty as the inherent mentality of service. Just as the part serves the whole, the spirit soul is constitutionally situated to serve the Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa. This service spirit is present in every living being but is often misplaced due to conditioning. The purpose of human life is to inquire about this eternal duty (sad-dharma-pṛcchāt) and reestablish the reciprocal exchange of love with the Supreme. Ultimately, this eternal duty is summarized by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu: the living entity is the eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa.
- Sanātana-dharma: The eternal occupational duty which cannot cease; distinct from temporary religious faiths.
- The Service Spirit: Every living entity serves someone; this mentality is the eternal occupational duty.
- The Relationship: It is the reciprocal exchange of love between the two eternals—the soul and Kṛṣṇa.
- The Necessity of Inquiry: One must be inquisitive about their eternal function, not just superficial rituals.
- Restoration: Surrendering to Kṛṣṇa and acting as His servant places the service spirit in its proper context.
