Theme Analysis

In the material world, knowledge is often a product of research and speculation, subject to constant revision. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda distinguishes this from eternal knowledge, which needs no research because it is already established. This knowledge (cit) is an intrinsic aspect of the Supreme Lord's form (sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha) and, by extension, the form of the living entity. While currently covered by material existence, this original state of full knowledge can be revived. Unlike the partial realization of the Paramātmā or Brahman features, which may focus on eternity or knowledge alone, the complete realization involves participating in the Lord's eternal pastimes. This knowledge is timeless, as demonstrated by Kṛṣṇa's instruction to the sun-god millions of years ago, which remained the same when spoken to Arjuna.

  • No Research Needed: Eternal knowledge is already established; it is not a new thesis or discovery.
  • Constitutional Nature: The soul shares the quality of cit (knowledge) with God, though in minute quantity.
  • The Goal: We are seeking to return to the eternal world to regain our body of eternal blissful knowledge.
  • Impersonal vs. Personal: Impersonalists are satisfied with just knowledge (light), but the full realization includes bliss (ananda) in relationship with Kṛṣṇa.
  • Permanence: Material knowledge is temporary; spiritual knowledge saves one from the greatest danger and continues even after death.
