Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda defines the eternally conditioned souls, or nitya-baddhas, as those living entities who have turned away from the Supreme Lord due to a misuse of their minute independence. Because of this rebellious attitude, they are placed under the care of the external energy, māyā, for rectification. The term "eternally conditioned" indicates that their entanglement in the material world is so ancient that it cannot be traced, and their forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa appears to be without beginning. Śrīla Prabhupāda contrasts them with the nitya-siddhas, or eternally liberated souls, who never forget their relationship with God. Despite this "eternal" conditioning, the living entity can regain their original position through the mercy of the Lord and the Vedic process of self-realization.

  • Definition: Nitya-baddha refers to souls who are conditioned by the material energy and forgetful of Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Cause: Misuse of independence and a desire to lord it over material nature.
  • The Symptoms: Identification with the gross and subtle bodies, suffering, and the struggle for existence.
  • Comparison: Unlike nitya-siddhas, conditioned souls are under the control of the mind and senses.
  • Redemption: The Lord descends and provides scriptures specifically to revive the lost memory of these souls.
