Theme Analysis

Human life is a rare boon, distinct from animal existence due to developed consciousness and the capacity for inquiry. Śrīla Prabhupāda asserts that every human being has specific obligations they must fulfill to validate their humanity. Foremost among these is the duty to inquire into the Absolute Truth (athāto brahma jijñāsā) and the cause of suffering. A human being must follow religious principles, undergo austerity (tapasya), and understand their relationship with God. Mere eating, sleeping, and mating are not enough; one must prepare for the next life and strive to end the cycle of birth and death. Ultimately, every human being must become God conscious, grateful for the Lord's mercy, and engaged in His service.

  • Inquiry and Consciousness: A human must ask "Why am I suffering?" and inquire about the Absolute Truth.
  • Austerity (Tapasya): Human life is meant for purification through voluntary restraint, not unrestricted sense enjoyment.
  • Gratitude: One must acknowledge that all necessities are supplied by God and offer gratitude.
  • Responsibility: Unlike animals, humans are responsible for their actions and must guard against degradation in the next life.
  • The Ultimate Goal: Every human being must aim to return home, back to Godhead.
