Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda confronts us with the ultimate paradox of material existence: although everyone is dying every moment, no one thinks they will die. This phenomenon, famously described by Yudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja as the most wonderful thing in the world, is the result of māyā, or illusion. Death is inevitable for everyone—kings, scientists, and animals alike. However, modern society, in its foolishness, tries to ignore this reality or creates inventions like atomic bombs that merely accelerate the process. Śrīla Prabhupāda distinguishes between two types of death: the death of a kṛpaṇa (miser) who dies without spiritual realization like a cat or dog, and the death of a brāhmaṇa who dies after a life of tapasya (austerity). The only way to stop "dying" is to engage in kṛṣṇa-kathā (topics of Kṛṣṇa), which awards eternal life.

  • The Great Paradox: Seeing everyone die yet thinking "I will live forever" is the most wonderful thing.
  • Scientific Failure: Science cannot stop death; it can only accelerate it.
  • Two Deaths: One can die as a kṛpaṇa (wasted life) or as a brāhmaṇa (perfected life).
  • The Reality: From the moment of birth, death begins; every second reduces our duration of life.
  • The Solution: Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa before death comes; those engaged in Kṛṣṇa's business are effectively not dying.
